Modena : The small lake of Ferrari Park

The English Geoffrey Gellicoe has contributed to designing the Ferrari Park, considered one of the greatest giarginiers and landscape designers of our time, who has included in the wide green area (48 hectares - the area of the old racetrack) a lacustrine area and a sequence of small hills that in an imaginary bird's eye view, almost tends to join the first Apennine offshoots.

Saharan dust events contribute to the aerosol load over Switzerland, mostly during spring and autumn. As a result of strong winds and major turbulence, sand particles from the North African desert region regularly rise up several kilometres into the atmosphere. The largest particles quickly fall back to the ground, but the smaller ones can be transported all the way to the Swiss Alps.

Fantasy Faire only has a few more days left, so if you haven't gone by, you should! Check out the beautiful sights, and give to a great cause. It's amazing how much work has been put into every last place, and I can promise you can find at least one sim that really speaks to you. If the people themselves don't. Most, including myself, have experienced the effects this miserable disease can have on themselves and loved ones. Strength comes in hope and unity, however, every little step getting us closer to a brighter future, I'm sure of that.

If you want to check out the sims or just support RFL and the awesome creators contributing to the cause, head over to my blog to catch a ride over!

"Man, respect, love and fear God. And remember that you are human. The church was erected from the ground up at the expense of Mina Pap Nikolaou Szampanaki on March 4, 1889".

The first sentence of the inscription is probably part of the poetic / musical tradition of the island, a couplet - religious in this case - with which the musicians composed the "mantinades", songs played in the "panigyri", celebrations that combined religion, entertainment and trade. The second, of course, mentions the donor who contributed to the construction of the temple.

Arctic Thyme, (Thymus praecox arcticus) 'Blóðberg' as it is known in Iceland, can be found across the island as it thrives in sandy and gravelly soil. The pretty purple flowers have long been used to make tea and Blóðberg is considered a staple among Icelandic herbs. It is said to have medicinal properties as well as health benefits such as strengthening the heart and head, cleansing the blood and contributing to menstrual regulation.

An extract from today's Journal:-

This part of Iceland is uninhabited, there is no grazing land for horses or sheep, just vast expenses of lava fields and black sandy soil from eruptions dating back to the last Ice Age. Then when you least expect it, there are fields of wild flowers, fast flowing rivers, waterfalls, or steam rising from the ground. Today we had the opportunity to take a swim in a hot spring, but everybody seemed to have forgotten to pack their swimming costume.

First of all, apologies for not having been around. I’ve been following his example of staring into the distance and striving for a complete state of comatose oblivion. And obviously, this worked rather well for me and him. Even though I recently picked up the camera again, did not really find anything worthwhile to record. My lack of motivation was and is a contributing factor.

Merry Christmas to all of you and having the best of intentions to post some more. Same as last year, I still dislike Christmas songs intensely, so I am using this one as an alternate.

A view of the Champaign County Courthouse in Urbana. The courthouse was designed by Joseph W. Royer (1873-1954), himself a University of Illinois School of Architecture graduate.

Construction of the courthouse began in the Spring of 1900, with the dedication in August, 1901. The architectural style is Richardsonian Romanesque with red sandstone and a mottled brick exterior. Cost of the project was $150,000. The Courthouse is a contributing building within the Downtown Urbana Historic District listed in 2019 on the National Register of Historic Places.

Urbana is the seat of Champaign County. Located in east central Illinois, the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign are the home of the University of Illinois. The population of Champaign County at the 2020 census was 205,865.

Mullerthal

Often referred to as the Little Switzerland of Luxembourg, Mullerthal - or Mëllerdall in Luxembourgish – owes its name to its hilly landscape reminiscent of Switzerland. The Mullerthal Region is above all a unique biotope characterized by rock formations that are as beguiling as they are surprising. It is the unique composition of the rock and soil erosion that have contributed to the creation of this landscape so typical of Luxembourg's Little Switzerland.

Saint Michael’s Cathedral of Alba Iulia was built between 1247 and 1291, which makes it contemporary to the famous Notre Dame of Paris. Furthermore, it appears that a great French architect, Villard de Honnecourt, contributed to its design. In addition to being the oldest and the longest cathedral in Romania (at 89.16 m measured along its axis), it is also considered the most important monument of Romanesque architecture in Transylvania.

The site is registered in the National Archaeological Repertory of Romania.

This stately mansion was built for J. Russell Jones, an influential Civil War patriot who later would become a U.S. Marshall, steamship owner, chairman of the Republican Party, and Minister Resident to Belgium during the Administration of his friend, President Ulysses S. Grant. Built in 1857, the Italianate style Jones House, now known as the Belvedere Mansion, is the largest mansion in Galena. Completely restored, Belvedere Mansion is open for tours.

The mansion is a contributing structure in the Galena Historic District. The district encompasses 85 percent of the City of Galena and includes more than 800 properties. The Galena Historic District was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1969, with modifications in 2013.

Galena is the seat of Jo Daviess County in the northwest corner of Illinois. This is the unglaciated area of northwestern Illinois. The rolling hills, history and abundant 19th century architecture draws visitors from throughout the country. The population of Galena at the 2020 census was 3,101.

A view of the 100 block of N. Walnut St. looking south from Taylor St. This block is part of the Champaign Downtown Commercial District added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020. All of the commercial buildings in this block are Italianate or Early 20th Century Commercial designs built were built in 1909, with the exception of the corner building (122 N. Walnut) that was completed in 1890. I suspect that there must have been a terrible fire or some other major calamity in 1908 or 1909 that destroyed nearly all of buildings in this block as this would explain why all but one of the buildings were constructed in 1909.

The large 6-story building with a glazed yellow brick facade seen in the next block is the old Inman Hotel. Constructed in 1915 and now repurposed as a senior independent living facility, the Inman was separately listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1989.

Located in Champaign County in east central Illinois, the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana are the home of the University of Illinois. The population of the City of Champaign at the 2020 census was 88,302, while Champaign County had a population of 205,865.

A view of two beautiful, late-nineteenth century Italianate buildings in the 400 block of Pulaski St, catty-corner from the Logan County Courthouse in downtown Lincoln. Both buildings lie within the Lincoln Courthouse Square Historic District that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The corner building at 429 Pulaski St. was constructed around 1885 and is a contributing building in the district. The two-part commercial building next to it at 425-427 Pulaski St. dates to 1890. With its cast iron front, second story windows with decorative hood molds and a heavy, metal cornice, the structure is identified as a significant building in the district.

Lincoln is the seat of Logan County, which is situated in central Illinois approximately 26 miles northeast of Springfield, the state capitol. The estimated population of Lincoln in 2018 was 13,685.

Wilbur House is a historic home located on Main street in Fairport in Monroe County, New York. It is a Second Empire–style structure built about 1873 that features a two-bay, 2-story tower that projects from the northeast corner of the 1 1⁄2-story front section. The tower, as well as the rest of the front section, is covered by a decorative fish scale and octagonal slate mansard roof. Also on the property is a contributing carriage house.

Hiram P. Wilbur was the superintendent (some say the first such) of the westernmost section of the Erie Canal, and also the postmaster for the town of Perinton.[3] The home he built in 1873 later served as a boarding school before reverting to a private residence. The house is currently 3,792 square feet (352.3 m2) with five bedrooms. Many of the historic details have been retained, including speaking tubes for intra-house communication.

With the battles finally over, work on temple construction began during the lunar month of February 1817. But the cost of construction was high and proper materials scarce. The Five Lords intervened again, visiting Madame Guo Feng of nearby Madou Village in a dream. Awaking, she took her palanquin to Nankunshen to deliver a personal donation of one thousand liang in silver – enough to keep work on the temple moving forward.

After five years and four months, work on the new temple was finished in 1822. It was at this time that the new home of the Five Lords was officially consecrated as ‘Nankunshen Daitian’ Temple. The original structure, built with the altars of the Five Lords at its center, was approached through a series of three main gates. An active center of worship for the next four decades, the temple gradually fell into disrepair. In 1864, Mssrs. Wu Kang, Hong Hu-pan and Tu Chian, three pious individuals from Keliao Village, together contributed 10,000 yuan for restoration work. In 1872, a new altar – ‘Ching Shan Temple’ - was added at the back, dedicated to the Guanyin Goddess to remember her role in mediating the dispute between the Five Lords and the child spirit.

My previous post showed the east side of the 100 block of N. Walnut St. looking south from Taylor St. This photo looks at the west side of the 100 block of N, Walnut looking north from Chester St. This block is part of the Champaign Downtown Commercial District added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2020.

All of the commercial buildings in this block are Italianate, Early 20th Century Commercial, or remodeled Art Deco designs built between 1895 and 1900, although some of the buildings have been remodeled and do not contribute to the historic district.

The six-story building seen two blocks away on the southwest corner of N. Walnut and E. Main is the east facing side of the The First National Bank. This Greek Revival-style building was erected in 1909, and was one of the first steel-constructed buildings in Champaign. Now a PNC Bank branch, the First National Bank building is featured in two previous posts in this Champaign and Urbana series.

Located in Champaign County in east central Illinois, the twin cities of Champaign and Urbana are the home of the University of Illinois. The population of the City of Champaign at the 2020 census was 88,302, while Champaign County had a population of 205,865.

A view of the east side of the 100 block on N. Kickapoo St. in downtown Lincoln as seen from Broadway St. The properties in this view lie within the Lincoln Courthouse Square Historic District that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

The three buildings in this view are early 20th century commercial designs constructed in the 1910s. On the corner of N. Kickapoo and Broadway St. is the former Lincoln Savings & Building Association Building completed in 1914. The center building appears to be commercial-use only while the building on the end was designed with commercial space on the ground floor and apartments above. All three buildings are contributing properties in the historic district.

In a biogeographic definition, paramo is any intertropical mountain ecosystem, characterized by shrubby vegetation that generally occurs from altitudes of about 3,000 to 4,000 meters or up to 5,000 meters, that is, in regions above the forest line. continuous but still below the permanent snow line. It is found in East Africa, New Guinea, and Central and South America. However, since in each of these regions this ecosystem has a specific name, when discussing Paramos, we refer specifically to Andean Paramos.

In this strict sense of the term, all Paramos are located in the neotropical zone, mainly in northwestern South America, present in Venezuela, Colombia, Peru and Ecuador. The ecosystem occupies over 30,000 km² of South America and represents 7% of Ecuador's territory. In absolute terms, Colombia is home to 50% of the extent of Paramos (in its three branches of the Andes) and the largest Paramo in the world (Sumapaz).

Paramos' climate is characterized by wide daily fluctuations in temperature and humidity. In general, cold and humid, can undergo a sudden and drastic change in which temperatures fluctuate from below freezing to 30 ° C plus in a daily freeze-thaw cycle. High altitude in tropical locations produces a special, cold, low air density atmosphere that allows for greater dispersion of ultraviolet radiation (light and heat). This climate can be summed up in the phrase "winter every night and summer every day."

In Paramo ecosystems, soils are generally recent, of glacial and volcanic origin, and many are still in formation. Its structure is a combination of organic material that decomposes very slowly in cold weather with volcanic ash. They usually have low pH (acidity) because of the abundance of moisture and high content of organic matter. These characteristics contribute to soil water retention, which in turn is the basis of an essential environmental service: the constant storage and distribution of clean water to lower places.

The largest and most known area is the Páramo grass, which covers large areas of the mountain ranges. It extends from approximately 3,500 to 4,100 m in height, and is mainly composed of grasses and small shrubs.

This Romanesque-style building was Winchester’s public elementary school from 1901 through 1958. Located on the first lot of the original town, platted in 1830, the building fell into disrepair before being purchased in 2004. It has since undergone a total restoration and has now been repurposed as a county museum.

The Old School Museum displays artifacts related to local history, agriculture, transportation, communication and public education. There is a great collection of interesting and unique items gathered from the businesses and society of early Scott County.

During the restoration, careful attention was paid to historic detail. Indeed, the school building itself serves as a tribute to the building trades and craftsmanship of a bygone era.

Winchester's former elementary school is a contributing property within the Winchester Historic District listed in 1979 on the National Register of Historic Places. The district includes 438 buildings, of which 273 are contributing.

Winchester is the seat of Scott County. Located in West Central Illinois, the city is part of the Jacksonville Micropolitan Statistical Area. The estimated population of Winchester in 2019 was 1,467.

This view shows the north side of the 300 block of E. State St. looking east (right) from N. East Street (cross street). On the northeast corner of the intersection is the American Bankers Building, once the home of a large insurance company that occupied 32,000 sq. ft. on the first and second floors.

Constructed in 1920 in the Neoclassical style, the American Bankers Building is a contributing property in the Jacksonville Downtown Historic District listed in the National Register of Historic Places. It is now occupied by Hamilton's Catering Service where the second floor has been converted into a 16,000 square foot meeting and banquet facility. The Jacksonville Convention & Visitors Bureau office is on the first floor, along with a bridal shop and professional offices. The other buildings in the 300 block of E. State St. will be looked at more closely in an upcoming post.

A view of the buildings on the north side of Lincoln's historic courthouse square as seen from the steps of the Logan County Courthouse. This view shows the entire 600 Block of Broadway St. All of the properties in this view lie within the Lincoln Courthouse Square Historic District that was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.

Of the eight buildings shown above, the former Lincoln Savings and Building Association building (c. 1914, Neoclassical) at the corner of Broadway and N. Kickapoo St. (left), and the two-story commercial building at the opposite end of the block (c. 1895, Italianate) at the corner of Broadway and N. McLean St. (right). are contributing properties in the historic district.

The buildings sandwiched between the two ends are a mix of newer mid-century commercial buildings, and older buildings that have been modernized to the extent that their historic architectural antecedents are basically unrecognizable. These buildings are non-contributing properties within the historic district.

Pop Corn Beaches are beaches where the sand has been replaced by a kind of carbonaceous shells that have a morphology and color reminiscent of popcorn. These are calcium carbonate skeletons synthesized by a species of red algae that inhabit the Canary coasts at shallow depths, called rhodoliths.

Rhodoliths occur extensively around the shores of Fuerteventura Island in the Canary Archipelago, with Lithothamnion cf. corallioides being the most prominent species.

It is by the action of the waves, that over the decades, a large number of rhodoliths end up being washed ashore, whose remains contribute to the formation of the sediments that make up the modern beaches, so these unusual beaches have been formed very slowly.

Although rhodoliths are resistant to a variety of environmental disturbances, they can be severely affected by storms, harvesting, ocean acidification and global warming, and the beds are known to be between 20 and 100 meters deep in most parts of the Canary Islands.

Along the beaches there are panels explaining what these "popcorn" are and that their extraction is forbidden, in spite of which the plundering is still very frequent. Unfortunately, every year tourists and locals remove a considerable amount of rhodoliths from the beaches, which represents a threat to these ecosystems, since, as I mentioned before, the remains of dead rhodoliths contribute greatly to the sediments that form contemporary beaches.

Most people do not immediate think of nylon when they think about plastic pollution, but nylon is another of the wide variety of polymers made from petroleum, contributing to the plastics that pollute the ocean. In time, nylon degrades in sunlight to thin fibers and small particles, easily ingested by wildlife. If not digested it can get wrapped around the poor gannets beak leaving then unable to catch food and feed.

The Parish Church of Santo Ildefonso was built in the first half of the 18th century, on the site of a former place of worship, namely, a chapel dedicated to a certain Santo Alifon, historically mentioned for the first time in the late 13th century. The chapel was brought down in 1709 due to its poor state, which gave way to the construction of the present Parish Church of Santo Ildefonso. Most of the construction works were completed in 1730, but it was not until 1739 that the edifice was completely set up and inaugurated .Sundry restoration and modification works were carried out in the course of history, such that at present the Parish Church of Santo Ildefonso is a fine example of the Baroque style brightening up the surroundings of Praca da Batalha with its blue and white ceramic tiles which adorn the facade. Other highlights refer to the mid 18th century retable by Nicolau Nasoni, the Italian architect who also contributed to the design of various parts of the Porto Cathedral and of the Clerigos Tower. Also of note are the two fairly decorated bell towers which flank the facade.

The Elihu Benjamin Washburne House was built for and owned by Elihu Benjamin Washburne, a prominent Galena lawyer who served in Congress during the Civil War, and as Secretary of State and Minister to France under President Ulysses S. Grant, another famous Galenian. Constructed in 1844–45, the Washburne House is an example of late Greek Revival architecture. The house was built in the style of Greek temples and features a 2-story porch with four fluted Doric columns.

The Washburne House is a declared Illinois State Historic Site, and was also listed in 1973 on the National Register of Historic Places. Additionally, the Washburne House is a contributing structure in the Galena Historic District which encompasses 85 percent of the City of Galena and includes more than 800 properties. The Garden sits nestled in the West Hills of Portland, Oregon overlooking the city and providing a tranquil, urban oasis for locals and travelers alike. Designed in 1963, it encompasses 12 acres with eight separate garden styles, and includes an authentic Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and a spectacular view of Mt. Hood. This is a place to discard worldly thoughts and concerns and see oneself as a small but integral part of the universe.

Born out of a hope that the experience of peace can contribute to a long lasting peace. Born out of a belief in the power of cultural exchange. Born out of a belief in the excellence of craft, evidence in the Garden itself and the activities that come from it. Born out of a realization that all of these things are made more real and possible if we honor our connection to nature.

A corner view of the Fiddick House in Galena. John Fiddick was born in Cornwell, England in 1826. He immigrated to the United States in 1841, and became a prominent dry goods merchant in Galena. Fiddick built this beautiful Second Empire style mansion in 1859, with additions made in 1883. He lived to the age of 92, and is buried in Galena's Greenwood Cemetery along with his wife, Mary.

This angle also provides a glimpse of the Asa Haile Row House next door. This Federal-style brick home with Greek Revival accents was constructed in 1856 for Asa Haile Row, a riverboat captain and successful mason. Both the Fiddick House and Row House are contributing properties in the Galena Historic District which encompasses 85 percent of the City of Galena and includes more than 800 properties. The Old Post Office, listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Old Post Office and Clock Tower and located at 1100 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, D.C., was begun in 1892, completed in 1899, and is a contributing property to the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site.[1] It was used as the city's main General Post Office until 1914 at the beginning of World War I, succeeding an earlier 1839 edifice, G.P.O. of Classical Revival style, expanded in 1866 on F Street, which later was turned over to the Tariff Commission and several other agencies (today, the Hotel Monaco). The Pennsylvania Avenue 1899 landmark structure functioned primarily as a federal office building afterward, and was nearly torn down during the construction of the surrounding Federal Triangle complex in the 1920s. It was again threatened and nearly demolished in the 1970s to make way for proposals for the completion of the enveloping Federal Triangle complex of similar Beaux Arts styled architecture government offices, first begun in the 1920s and 30s.

There are so many factors that contribute to the colors of the sunset over the ocean. My preference is the ones that are softer, in more pastel shades. This moment was captured seconds after the sun no longer was visible using a long exposure with movement. The flocks of birds are a common sight at this glorious hour. It's as if they were gone for the day and now at sunset know it's time to head home. I never tire of this experience, and it's the perfect ending to any day.

The backstory is that I met the homeowner who grew flowers in abundance. Her ten-year-old granddaughter came up with the idea of selling the flowers and giving the money to a local food bank. That sure touched my heart and I thanked them for their kindness and hard work (plus contributed to the cause). Kudos to Nana and her granddaughter! HSS!

"Harpers Ferry is best known for its role in the history of abolitionism and the American Civil War. In 1859, abolitionist John Brown led a raid on the federal armory at Harpers Ferry in an attempt to spark a slave revolt. Brown's raid was unsuccessful, but it helped to galvanize support for the abolitionist cause and contributed to the outbreak of the Civil War." Source: Google Bard 29 Apr 2023

Baltimore and Ohio Railroad built the original railroad tunnel in the 1850s, before the Civil War.

The 900 block of N. McClean Street, on the east side of Bloomington's Franklin Square, has an interesting history in terms of Illinois politics. Of the four stately residences on this block, three were home to late 19th and early 20th century gubernatorial candidates: Joseph W. Fifer, who served one term as Illinois Governor from 1889 to 1893; Adlai Stevenson I, who served as Vice President of the United States under Grover Cleveland from 1893 to 1897, but then lost a close race for governor in 1908; and Frank H. Funk, who ran and lost as the Progressive "Bull Moose" Party candidate for Illinois Governor in 1912.

This post looks at the Queen Anne style Bates-Funk House which was built about 1891 for T. M. Dates, the superintendent of transportation for the Chicago and Alton Railroad Company. Frank H. Funk (1869-19, grandson of McLean County pioneer Isaac Funk, lived in the house from 1897 to 1924.

Frank Funk was born in Bloomington in 1869. He was a Yale graduate, managed over 2,000 acres of farmland, and also had an extensive political career. He was elected state senator to the Illinois General Assembly in 1909, and held that position until 1913. As previously noted, Funk ran for Illinois governor on the Bull Moose ticket in 1912 making him the third person living in the 900 block of N. McClean St. to be a party-nominated candidate for the Illinois governorship between 1888 and 1912. Frank Funk finished his political career as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representative from 1921 to 1927. Funk died in Bloomington at the age of 71 in 1940.

The Bates-Funk House is a contributing property in Bloomington's Franklin Square Historic District, which is located northwest of downtown Bloomington. The Square is named in honor of Franklin Price, who was the mayor of Bloomington Mayor in 1856 when land for the Square was gifted to the city.

Franklin Square was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976, and was designated a local historic district in 1979. The houses of Franklin Square were built in a variety of architectural styles from the mid 19th century through the early 20th century, including Georgian Revival, Italianate, Colonial, Queen Anne, and Richardsonian Romanesque.

Bloomington is the seat of McLean County. It is adjacent to Normal, and is the more populous of the two principal municipalities of the Bloomington-Normal metropolitan area. Bloomington is 135 miles (217 km) southwest of Chicago, and 162 miles (261 km) northeast of St. Louis. The estimated population of Bloomington in 2019 was 77,330, with a metro population of 191,067.

Indeed, chess played a significant role in the cultural and intellectual life of the Ottoman Empire. The game's popularity extended across different social classes, and its strategic nature made it a valuable tool for military training and intellectual development.

The use of chess as a means of military education is noteworthy, as it reflects the recognition of the game's ability to enhance strategic thinking and planning. The Ottomans integrated chess into the curriculum of military academies, providing officers with a practical and enjoyable way to develop their strategic skills.

The artistic and cultural aspects of Ottoman chess sets highlight the intersection of chess with the broader artistic traditions of the time. The intricate designs and motifs inspired by Islamic art and architecture not only added aesthetic value to the chess sets but also showcased the cultural richness of the Ottoman Empire.

The existence of manuscripts and treatises on chess from the Ottoman period underscores the intellectual engagement with the game. These works not only discussed strategies and rules but also delved into the cultural and philosophical dimensions of chess. Such writings contributed to the broader intellectual heritage of the Ottoman Empire.

The widespread popularity of chess, evident in its presence in various social settings, from the courts of the sultans to coffeehouses, reflects its accessibility to people from different walks of life. The local variations and adaptations of the game over time further demonstrate its dynamic evolution within the Ottoman cultural context.

Overall, the history of chess in the Ottoman Empire is a fascinating chapter that highlights the multifaceted role of the game in shaping intellectual, artistic, and military aspects of society during that period.
